Firstly a very MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR to all our readers.
As you may have noticed work has now commenced on the raised planter adjacent to the Greenside Lane/Haven Drive path, and the new path leading from Collinwood Road entrance and linking into the Greenside Lane/Haven Drive path, a number of Vale users asked for this path to laid as the ‘desire line’ track that was already in situ was very muddy following rain fall, it’s been a long time coming but as with everything we have to wait for funding to become available for new projects.
The planter will provide us with a site where we can hopefully get a variety of wildflowers growing, our previous sowing of wildflower seeds hasn’t been too successful despite careful preparation of the ground and aftercare the weeds just seem to take over and prevent the flowers coming through.
Some may remember the sowing of the poppy seeds by Greenside Lane schoolchildren in commemoration of 100 years of the Great War, unfortunately the Poppy seeds failed to germinate and no flowers grew.
It is hoped that we can sow Poppy seeds in the planter to provide a lasting memory and tribute to not only those who fell in the Great War but also others who have died in more recent conflicts.
The next work party is on 13th December, meeting on the green at Peakdale Road at 11.00 am.
For details of the 2016 work party dates please see the website calendar.
This is also the date of Tameside ‘Valuing our Communities’ Fund granting. We have submitted an application for funding and hopefully if we are successful we will be able to start more new projects which will include a pond and outdoor learning area.
